About Central Cemetery

The City of Portage maintains four municipal cemeteries, totaling over 28 acres, at which interment
and perpetual care are provided through the Department of Public Services. Cemetery services are provided throughout the year.

The oldest of the cemeteries are Indian Fields and Dry Prairie, which contain grave markers dating back to the early 1800s. Today the only active cemeteries are Central Cemetery and South Cemetery.

Thank you Shelley! You were so helpful to me in getting a headstone. It was a unique request for my great uncle who died as a baby with the influenza epidemic of 1918, he never got a marker. You helped me through all the decisions, some I had no clue like the lettering and shiny or mat finish.I can’t wait to see the finished product when it’s delivered. Thanks again Shelley!

Besides human gravestones and cemetary markers, this company also offers pet memorial stones, like the kind you'd put in a garden and/or next to a backyard burial site. What makes Black Monument Company stand out is that they actually do the etching of the words right there in-house vs. a couple other places I called in town (pet cemetaries like Noah's) where they have to send away for custom stones, which takes days or weeks and costs more money. I was very happy with Black Monument Co - the pet grave marker they designed is a perfect sweet way to honor the memory of my dear departed furry friend.
